Beauty Board: Lip Gloss

If ads for popular beauty products leave you skeptical, relax. Our 4you Beauty Board's veteran testers are ready to try the latest and greatest when it comes to all things beauty. We'll share what worked and what bombed with the hope of making your life a little easier. This week: Will these glamorous glosses leave our lips shiny or slimy?

Shu Uemura Sweet Lip Gloss

Available at Sephora, Neiman Marcus, Ulta and www.shuuemura-usa.com; $18 for a tube

"Delectably sweet lip glosses in 16 transparent, translucent or semi-opaque glossy shades. Each inspired and flavored by fruity jams."

Rating: B+

Michelle says: Since when did lip gloss become part of my makeup bag staples list? It used to be an add-on; now it's a necessity. Blame it on all those collagen-injected People magazine celebs and their big-wet-kiss lips. Of course I want to achieve that look! The problem is finding a lip gloss that doesn't feel like a Gummy Bear pasted to my lips, doesn't travel to my teeth and park there, and doesn't disappear within 10 minutes of application. I tried the Nectarine Jam flavor of this gloss. Not only did it have staying power, it really did have a sweet taste. This line was developed by a bona fide big-shot makeup artist, and since gloss is hot in Hollywood, it's no surprise he put out a winner. Take that, Angelina Jolie. You're not the only one with a glistening pout.

L'Oreal Infallible 6-hour lip gloss

Available at most mass-market retailers, including Walgreens, Target and CVS; $9.99

"The first 6-hour lip gloss that never fails to wear, never fails to shine in only one step."

Rating: D

Cloe says: Shiny lips are one of today's hottest fashion trends. And I like my lips to shine like a good pair of patent leather shoes. Unfortunately, that means I have to reapply often. L'Oreal claims to solve this problem with its six-hour "never fail" lip gloss. I chose Sangria (just like the drink) for its shimmery highlights. The gloss has a built-in mirror, but I never needed it because the flattened triangle-style wand allows for easy, even application. With a few dips, my lips had that high-wattage shine I love. But the gloss felt thick and sticky on my lips. And within minutes, it was all over my teeth. Unlike the commercial, it did come off on my coffee mug. And I left a Sangria-hued imprint of my lips on hubby's cheek. Infallible failed to live up to its claims.

Stila Lip Glaze

Available at stilacosmetics.com and Sephora stores; $22 for .08 ounces

"Choose from an array of delectable shades that add a splash of color and fabulously matching flavors and scents in one easy click of the famous pen."

Rating: B+

Kim says: The best thing about this lip glaze is the delivery system: You click the pen to get the amount you want on the brush, and it goes on without a mess. Or maybe the best thing is how it looks: It's shiny, smooth and the color, Praline, is a pretty neutral. Or perhaps it's that it lasts longer than most lipsticks and glosses — at least an hour, even if you eat or drink something between applications. So what's the downside? It feels kind of thick and sticky on your lips, which is something I could get used to, but not my husband, who veered off-course and delivered a peck on the cheek every time I used this product around him. Unacceptable! The solution: The Stila Lip Glaze travels with me in a purse pocket, but it is not for home use.

Sally Hansen Natural Butter Lip Shine

Available at Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Target; $5.99 for .25 ounces

"Quenching care with glossy shine."

Rating: A-

Shantae says: I normally don't wear a lot of color or shine on my lips because they are naturally big. I don't like them to be so bold or shiny that they enter the room before I do. Sally Hansen's Natural Butter Lip Shine provided just enough shine to be sexy, but not so much that it looked like I was trying out for a lip commercial. The color is subtle, but you can add another coat for more intense color. The shea, mango, cocoa, olive and avocado butters will keep your lips supersoft. It's a perfect cross between a gloss and a balm. The consistency is very creamy, but it slides right on. It's long-lasting and has a nice fruity smell. I like the brush applicator versus the normal sponge applicator. Another plus is it is packaged with environmentally friendly materials. Overall, it's a little sticky but still a winner.
